SUNDAY SEMINAR: Systems Management

This workshop will cover:

  1. HMC, what it does, when you need one, general care and feeding.
  2. FSP updates, why, when, how (two ways: with and without HMC).
  3. PTFs for i5/OS, gettin' 'em and loadin' 'em, and knowing what you have! (including Fix Central overview).
  4. VMI - Tape and Optical. The care and feeding of image catalogs and how to clean a virtual tape drive.
  5. Management central - performance monitoring, PTF distribution, central site inventory.
  6. Storage Management - How much disk is enough (rhetorical question!). Adding disk, managing ASPs (including iASPs)
  7. RCLSTG and why you need one.
  8. Various System values.
  9. Spool file maintenance including use of iASPs, Joblog Servers, and disconnected spool file functions.

Inside the HMC
Based on true user experience! We'll cover everything from the options and pieces for the HMC comes it's basic usage. We'll discuss installation, software updates, connectivity, user profiles, user capabilities, things to watch for and some things NOT to do! We'll also discuss updating your System i's FSP using the HMC. When you leave this session, you will be comfortable with what an HMC is, and how to get one up and running, and how to use it remotely. The session is based on HMC code level 7.3.2 so if you already have an HMC but would like to see what you're missing in the newer version come on down! What we will not cover is the detail of creating and working with partitions, this is an HMC session!

LPAR Configuration Issues and Planning
This session will cover some of the more common (and some of the uncommon) issues that occur during the implementation of an LPAR. Knowing that the issues exist is an advantage when performing an installation. This session will arm you with information necessary for a successful LPAR implementationWe will cover topics from some basic LPAR requirements, through requirements for various operating systems, and issues relative to various hardware models. We will discuss console options, RAID cards, disk rules, cabling rules, loop rules and power issues. We'll touch on racking items and hints. We will discuss methods and options for migrating from one system to an LPARed system.

Managing System i PTFs
What are PTFs? Why do I need them? How do I get them? Which ones do I need? In this session we will describe PTFs, Cumultative PTFs, and other PTF Groups. We'll discuss how to find out what you have, how to get them, how to put them in place and much more.

Work Management with System i Navigator
Work management has traditionally been a 'green screen' oriented task but System i Navigator has become a true contender as best tool for the job. Learn how System i Navigator can be the best tool in your box for managing your IBM i workloads.

CL Enhancements from V5R3 through V6R1
For a long time, IBM treated the CL Language as the ugly stepchild. That all changed with the delivery of V5R3 and the parade of enhancements has continued right through V6R1. In this session, we will review all of the enhancements that can make your life easier as a CL Programmer.
